Matt has a fantastic online course for aspiring Video Game Music Composers, and has teamed up with MyVGM and VGM Lounge to provide the perfect environment for a year long interactive online class that introductions you to all the important aspects of successfully making music for the video game industry. This is a combination of theory, practical application, team challenges and exercises, online class interactions and Q&A sessions, discussion forums, promotion and exposure.
Hi, I'm Scott (aka dGecko) and I have decided that 2023 will be the year I focus some time on learning music theory. To that end I have joined Matt's online course, and I invite you to do the same and join me in a year long exploration of music theory for video game music. Lets study together and support each other along the way!
This course will run over 10 months from March 2023 to December 2023. Each month you will dive into a different aspect of music making from Matt's course (self-paced study), discuss the theory with your class mates in the VGM Lounge Discord server, participate in a monthly challenge to put what you have learnt into practice, and distribute the music you create to the world of online music with the MyVGM Record Label.
A deep introduction by Matt Kenyon into music composition theory specifically targeted at making Video Game Music. You will learn about harmony, melody and arrangement, and have the chance to discuss what you learn with your class mates, including Q&A sessions with Matt each month.
Each month there will be a matching music making challenge on VGM Lounge that gives you a chance to test out what you have learnt. This will be a opportunity to practice your skills in a friendly and supportive environment, get feedback and make friends with VGM fans and fellow composers.
Share the music you make via a new VGM Label designed specifically for people wanting to get into the video game industry. Perfect for aspiring and emerging composers to get known and break into the industry, and earn royalties as you do.
Access to the full Making Game Music course from Matt's online course. This includes five levels covering Harmony, Chord Progressions, Extensions, Voicing and Substitutions, Melody and Arrangement. It importantly covers dynamic music, a critical aspect of making music for video games. The course is presented as a series of self-paced videos.
Access to the VGM Lounge Discord server, including a private students only discussion forum where you can discuss the content of the course with your class mates and join in a monthly online Q&A session with Matt. You will have a safe place to share works in progress with class mates to get advice and hone your challenge submissions.
Join a monthly music making challenge that gives you a practical exercise related to the course content for each month. Challenge submission are shared with the whole server community for supportive feedback, so you can learn and improve your craft.
Share the best of your work with the world on the MyVGM Label, a online music distribution label designed to support emerging VGM talent. It gives you access to world wide distribution to all the streaming services at a very user friendly cost. It is free for active VGML members.

Matt's online course is a self-paced video series with supporting information. The class discussions take place on the VGM Lounge Discord server in a private channel only for people who have joined Matt's course. Students are encouraged to use the forum to discuss the current months topics, share works in progress, resources and provide support for each other. Once a month Matt will jump into the voice chat for a Q&A session for that months topic. Challenges will be run on the VGM Lounge Discord server as a special series throughout 2023. Challenges are open to anyone to join, but only course members get access to the course forums and Q&A sessions. For those that can't join Matt's course there will be a number of resources provided to cover the same topic, but it won't have the neat structure of the course.
You can read all about that here. MyVGM.com The distribution service is designed to help get you started releasing music to the world.
No, everyone is welcome to join and submit to the VGML challenges, you just won't have access to the course material or the students forum. We will though still have a shared space where you can discuss music theory as you participate in the challenges.
Yes, to get access to the student forums for Matt's course you need to join both services, though you can opt for the free MyVGM option for VGM Lounge members.

You can then work on your submission during the month as you work though the course material and when it is ready, submit the completed work on this website. All entries are held until the end of the challenge round and then posted to the server for all members to vote and provide feedback on. Feedback is constructive and supportive. (There are other challenges you can join as well if you like!)
